MARKET
2021
In 2021, I gained new perspective on protective styling for textured hair while navigating pandemic grocery shopping. I realized how resourceful my community is, frequently repurposing items like plastic bags into makeshift shower caps.
This inspired me to visually comment on critiques of Black women wearing hair bonnets in public. I found myself using that same ingenuity by repurposing bread tags into playful hair accessories. Their unique shapes and colors evoked nostalgia for the intricate braids and accessories of my childhood. My citrus fruit durag series expanded on this theme, incorporating the mesh produce bag design into a whimsical take on another protective style. 100% fresh!
Overall, this work celebrates the creativity and resilience of my community in styling and caring for textured hair.
